Unlike the idea of a clear-cut boundary between what we can and cannot perceive, signal-detection theory acknowledges that detecting stimuli is a complex process. For example, think of a radar operator trying to spot an airplane on a radar screen. The plane’s blip might be faint and easily confused with signals from flocks of birds or bad weather, which act like visual "noise." The operator’s ability to detect the plane depends on factors like their sensitivity, motivation, and focus.
